Illaman, Chris “Fatty” Hargreaves, and DJ Pravvy Prav are PENGSHUi: Listen to Their New Single, Eat The Rich

In the words of rapper and PENGSHUi vocalist Illaman, “The balance between rich and poor has never been clearer and more evident. The world’s rich are the richest they’ve ever been – profiting from slave labour, tax evasion and pillaging of the world’s resources – while the poor just get poorer.”

While the title of the new track speaks for itself, this explanation, which accompanied the release of PENGSHUi’s new single, expounds on the song’s core message. As Illaman continues, “It feels like we – the people on the ground, the poor, the struggling, the council estate working class – have been left to fight for ourselves and “Eat The Rich” is the theme song for that fight.”

If you’ve never heard of PENGSHUi before, this new track is certainly a good introduction to the band’s unique and eclectic mix of genres. Apart from elements of old school hip hop, punk, and EDM, the band’s sound can be categorized as grime. In a nutshell, grime is a rap/hip hop sub-genre that’s inspired by UK garage, jungle, and the African-Caribbean roots of British rappers, beatmakers, and EDM DJs. Much like its parent genre of hip hop, grime tackles the realities faced everyday by folks in the streets – at 140 bpm and above. In short, Eat The Rich might be the grimiest track of 2021. And if you’re curious about the boys behind the music, here are some facts about the members of PENGSHUi.

Illaman

Long-time veteran of the London hip hop scene and self-proclaimed ‘Hardest Working Emcee in the UK,’ Illaman is a name that’s familiar to most European rap fans. In the past, he’s worked with the likes of Flux Pavillion, who also co-wrote Eat The Rich. And his other collaborators include Goldie, Foreign Beggars, Problem Child, and Chinese Man. There’s no doubt that Illaman provides the old school hip hop and punk flavours in this manic and meaty musical stew.

Chris “Fatty” Hargreaves

Bass guitar genius, musical director, and guitar effects hoarder Chris “Fatty” Hargreaves is most popularly known for being the brains behind dubstep act Submotion Orchestra. However, Hargreaves’ bass and Line 6 pedals have also served artists like Andreya Triana, Alex Clare, Outlook Orchestra, and Newham Generals. In PENGSHUi, he casts off his soulful roots and sets fire to his pedalboard. From his aggressively gritty overdrives to his ominous, ambient, and synthesiser-like riffs, Hargreaves is a one-person EDM, jungle, dubstep, and garage machine.

DJ Pravvy Prav

Having worked with the likes of Jehst, Foreign Beggars, Gentleman’s Dub Club, Jorja Smith, and Maverick Sabre, DJ Pravvy Prav is an eclectic beatmaker. As the drummer of PENGSHUi, Prav commands a Roland drum pad alongside a full drum set. Armed with these tools, he’s responsible for keeping time in this grime-driven ensemble. Considering his deep roots in EDM, hip hop, and UK garage, Prav’s the perfect man for the job.

Eat The Rich is just one of the many tracks that PENGSHUi has released this year. Prior to this single, the band also released their first full-length and self-titled album.
