‘Glacial’ is a term often used to describe experimental electronic music but that would be a criminally wasteful term of expression to describe the sucking, shifting, pulsing and often gnarled soundscapes of Ipek Gorgun. At times it does indeed have an Eno and Fennesz like pinpoint crystal iciness about it with what feels like washes of cold, pure sound invading the head space, and yet at other times the growling, bubbling analogue synths of someone like Bernard Parmegiani or Aphex Twin spring to mind, or the instrumental/acoustic composition of Tristan Murail.

Ipek Gorgun is an electronic music composer and a Ph.D candidate of Sonic Arts at ITU-MIAM (Istanbul Technical University-Center for Advanced Studies in Music). After graduating from Bilkent University (B.A Political Science), she completed her Master’s Degree in Philosophy at Galatasaray University with her dissertation in French, entitled “The Silence of Being-Alone and Being-Together in Heidegger’s Being and Time”.

As one of the participants of the Red Bull Music Academy 2014, she performed in Tokyo as an opening artist for Ryoji Ikeda’s “Test Pattern No: 6” and joined Otomo Yoshidide for a collective improvisation project.

As a bass player and vocalist for projects such as Bedroomdrunk (avant-garde rock) and Vector Hugo (electro-acoustic), she also performed in an opening gig for Jennifer Finch from L7 and Simon Scott from Slowdive, as well as performing live with David Brown from Brazzaville. Besides group projects, she gave solo performances at the collective electronic music events in Borusan Music Hall, Aksanat and Sureyya Opera Hall in Istanbul. Ipek Gorgun composed the soundtrack for the documentary ‘Yok Anasinin Soyadi (Mrs. His Name) directed by Hande Cayir in 2012, portraying Turkish women’s struggle to keep their original surnames after marriage. Her work entitled “The Passion for Knots (Ode to Philippe Petit”) also premiered in Thessaloniki, Greece in 2014 Spring at the electroacoustic night in Mikropolis.

Besides musical efforts, Ipek Gorgun is a published poet contributing to contemporary poetry journals such as Yumusakge and Tenedos. She is a performance photographer, mainly focusing on the underground music scene in Turkey and street photography. She also won the IPA honorable mention award in 2013-14 with her work entitled “Bubblegun Daydreamer” and in 2013, she was the billboard photographer for Contemporary Istanbul.
She is currently working on her electro-acoustic solo project and researching how sonic arts can be incorporated with cognitive and emotional alteration.
