ARIA Award-nominated Sydney-based composer and electronic artist Lance Gurisik released today his much-anticipated sophomore album, PROFFER, on August 23, 2024, under his Sydney-based label 33 Sides, with global distribution through Inertia/PIAS. Gurisik’s music blends jazz, electronica, and contemporary orchestral elements, earning him critical acclaim and multiple awards, including two APRA Screen Awards. His innovative compositions continue pushing modern music’s boundaries, offering listeners a unique and immersive experience.

Gurisik’s debut album, CULL PORTAL, was celebrated for its modern-fusion take on modal jazz with electronic influences. It featured Australian saxophonist Jeremy Rose and garnered widespread recognition, including being nominated for Best Jazz Album at the ARIAs and named The Guardian UK’s Contemporary Album of the Month.

PROFFER is a psychedelic fusion record that blends eclectic musical influences. Drawing inspiration from German krautrock hero Manuel Göttsching, French synth legends AIR, minimalist composer Terry Riley, and classical composers Ralph Vaughan Williams and Alexander Scriabin, Proffer is a maximalist exploration of experimental electronic, jazz, and modern classical forms.

The album features collaborations with Lamorna Nightingale from Australia’s premier Ensemble Offspring on alto and bass flute, Nick Meredith on drums and percussion, a 16-piece string section performed by Ian Cooper on violins and violas, Paul Ghica on Viola da Gamba and cellos, and Lance himself on modular synth and keyboards.

PROFFER challenges the prevailing norms in the music industry, advocating for music as a vehicle of escapism and self-exploration through active listening. The album’s maximalist approach to composition and production pushes the boundaries of where experimental electronic, jazz, and modern classical forms meet, creating an adventurous and cinematic listening journey.

The album’s visual experience is equally compelling, designed to enhance the auditory journey of PROFFER through stunning visual storytelling. For the “Welter” music video, Lance collaborated with Chinese-American visual artist Danski Tang, renowned for her exquisite 2D hand-drawn animation. Tang’s work on “Welter” brings a dreamlike quality to the music, creating a mesmerising blend of fluid, intricate drawings that mirror the album’s psychedelic fusion and transcendence themes. Her animation captures the ethereal and abstract elements of Gurisik’s composition, pulling viewers into a surreal, immersive world where sound and sight meld seamlessly.

Additionally, for the tracks “Prednisone” and “Glut,” Gurisik partnered with experimental visual artist Morgan Beringer, based in London. Beringer’s distinctive style, which often incorporates abstract digital techniques and glitch aesthetics, perfectly complements the album’s exploration of surrealism and escapism. His visuals for these tracks push the boundaries of conventional music videos, using dynamic and sometimes disorienting imagery to reflect the complex layers and shifting tones of Gurisik’s music.
