Afropunk ‘Mirror Signal excels exploring the depth between beats. Reverb is too often used as a stand-in for actual atmosphere, but Steven Barker-as-producer seems to have an uncanny feel for ambience.’

Fresh on the Net – ‘Great voice, great songs & a unique ability to cross pollinate jazz, soul, pop & folk in a lovely organic way – what more could you ask for?’

Stupid DOPE – ‘Not only does “Broken Soldier” show off his soulful sound, but also his unique songwriting and incredibly dope appeal.’

Fronting with a stage name rich in metaphoric subtleties, Steven Barker from Suffolk has already had success in steering tastemaker traffic towards his musical moniker, Mirror Signal. Debuting two years ago with his bedroom- composed EP called Broken Soldier, the singer/songwriter/producer has supported the likes of Jess Glynne, Jamie Cullum and John Newman – to name a few. BBC Radio 1’s Huw Stephens and Radio 6’s Gilles Peterson also champion Barker’s fusion of electronica and soul, and marking his return this year, he is now sharing Mirror Signal’s latest single, “All Along”.

Barker’s contemplative lyrics are delivered in true Mirror Signal fashion, working as an extension of the chilled atmosphere created by the simultaneously sharp and soft keys, accompanied by murmuring synths. “You said I can’t tie my shoes, maybe you can pull some strings, but I’ve become so undone that I can barely move’, is one of the instances where the young talent breathes life into his cleverly constructed wordplay.

“All Along” tells a tale about stagnant love, in which Barker closely observes a female companion whose reserved behaviour expresses her feelings of anxiety and incompatibility within the relationship. The repetition in the hook – ‘All along, I’ve been behind you, I’ve been behind you, all along’ – further emphasises the circular motion of Barker’s thoughts, using his soft, high- climbing vocals to help express his concerns.

“All Along” is an impressive return from Mirror Signal this year, and gives a pleasant taste of his forthcoming EP Herculean Task.

“All Along” is the lead single from Mirror Signal’s forthcoming EP called Herculean Task, due to be released by Pegdoll Records on 22nd June.
