“When at a loss, I find myself writing songs. I remember the songs for our new album starting to arrive while I was sitting in my hallway staring through the window at the view of the South Downs,” says Noble Jacks’ Will. “At first there was no song to write, but as I picked up my guitar, whispering lyrics emerged, echoing my concern for the unfamiliar present and anxiety about the future. I grabbed at the music with both hands.”

Riding a wave of momentum following the critical and commercial success of 2019’s ‘Stay Awake’ album launch, and a huge tour with The Dead South, Noble Jacks were heading into 2020 and beyond with stars in their eyes. We all know what happened next. “Covid jolted hard on our reins and brought us to a sudden dead stop,” says Will. “I experienced a whirlwind of emotions at the start of lockdown: disbelief, confusion, despair… then I was chomping at the bit, desperate to get back out, live on stage. The response to COVID also provided a cruel reminder that the financial lifeline of many independent artists is live shows.

COVID ended up giving the band a full album of new songs and also allowed them to Find new ways to be creative from home, the band explored co-writing via Zoom with the likes of Katherine Priddy and The Wandering Hearts. “That was a great experience and pushed our skills outside our comfort zone,” reveals Will. “We are really happy with the songs that came out, it feels like there is some light at the end of the tunnel and we are thrilled to have an album up our sleeve for the reopening of live music.”

Noble Jacks’ new album is ‘Last Of The Wild’, and the band’s sound has come full circle. Having had the time to focus and dig deep into creating new songs, the new album is brimful of classic Americana roots music while staying true to the Noble Jacks popular sound, still fiddle driven but underpinned with pedal steel and melancholy riffs. The evolution of vocal harmonies and big vocal choruses has continued too. “The songs encapsulate layers of storytelling vocals, warm guitars, driving drums and catchy riffs,” says Will. From soaring fiddles and wailing harmonica, in tune with Noble Jacks’ folkloric roots, this new flowing sound the band has hit upon tells stories of people and is filled with hope for the future. “There is always a large dose of optimism within our music. The new album is an exciting ride,” he smiles. Writing new songs has become a relatively fast process for Noble Jacks, but when the band remained locked-down with the rest of the country and unable to play these new tunes live, they kept writing. “From heartfelt notions around preserving our planet, to being stuck on an island and staying headstrong while the rain keeps pouring and the world keeps spinning, this album could be a reflection on our multifaceted lives,” reveals Will. “This is the first time we have collaborated with artists outside our band and it’s brought a rejuvenating new style with it.”

Noble Jacks alternative Americana and hard-hitting live shows guarantee this wild and free-wheeling music never stands still. “The UK Americana scene has such a strong community of artists and fans… and the music is so broad,” laughs Will. “Our musical influences are a wonderful mix of classic heroes from the 1960s up to contemporary artists, that all merge together into an amazing mix. UK Americana has a really unique sound due to the influence of traditional folk and folk rock.” As fans of Americana heroes such as Bob Dylan, The Band, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen and The Rolling Stones, Noble Jacks’ sound can also be heard in more contemporary influences such as Mumford & Sons, The War on Drugs, Fleet Foxes, The Devil Makes Three, Nathaniel Rateliff and the much-missed Justin Townes Earle. “As a band we travel a lot and listen to a lot of folk and rock classics,” says Will. “The broad church of Americana is a soundtrack to our lives.” Looking forward to getting back on the road and playing new music to their growing army of fans, Noble Jacks are set to reap the rewards of hunkering down and making the most of their time away from the stage. The new album, “Last of the Wild”, still driven by Will’s foot stomping fiddle and harmonica but with haunting guitar and pedal steel riffs too, will bring even more excitement and diversity to their 2022 set!

“We can’t wait to have that feeling of a jam-packed gig singing our lyrics back to us, it’s just such an indescribable feeling…”
